Ervin Stepp: A Scoring Legend
At Phelps High School in Eastern Kentucky, Ervin Stepp delivered one of the most extraordinary performances in high school basketball history. Averaging nearly 54 points per game during his senior year—without the benefit of a three-point line—Stepp set a record that still stands. Across his junior and senior years, he maintained a staggering two-year average of over 50 points per game, a feat unmatched at any level of the sport.
Unmatched and Unbroken
Despite changes in the game, including the addition of the three-point line, no one has come close to Stepp's scoring records in Kentucky. “After the fact, I really felt that with the three-pointer someone would probably break it,” Stepp said. Yet his mark endures, and Gary Fogle, host of Kentucky Sports Memories, emphasizes that Stepp's performance remains unique in basketball history—high school, college, or pro.
The Voice of Kentucky Sports History
Gary Fogle created Kentucky Sports Memories to honor the stories of local sports legends like Stepp. A lifelong fan of both sports and history, Fogle began collecting newspaper clippings as a child. His passion evolved into a radio show now broadcast on 40 stations across the state, where he shares untold stories that enrich Kentucky’s athletic heritage.
Sports as Cultural Storytelling
Fogle's program does more than recall stats—it captures the spirit and context behind the accomplishments. It offers a platform for voices that might otherwise be forgotten and connects listeners to the cultural roots of Kentucky sports. Through Stepp’s story and many others, Fogle helps preserve and celebrate the state’s unique athletic legacy.
A Family's Unseen Role
Stepp’s remarkable shooting ability wasn’t just raw talent—it was honed through a creative training method devised by his father. Using a rim smaller than regulation size, Stepp practiced precision shooting at home. This made the standard 18-inch hoop seem easier in games and helped sharpen his accuracy, proving how family support and innovation can shape greatness.
A Legacy That Lives On
The story of Ervin Stepp is more than a tale of individual achievement—it's a tribute to community, creativity, and the power of memory. Through Kentucky Sports Memories, Fogle ensures that legends like Stepp continue to inspire. Their legacies remain vibrant, not just in record books, but in the hearts of those who remember and celebrate them.
