The Social Spark

Golf is often seen as a solitary pursuit, a game where players battle the course and their own personal limits. But for Marsha Bordas, golf was just as much about friendships as it was about competition. Growing up in Lexington, she initially steered clear of the sport, opting instead for activities her friends were into, like swimming and softball.

That all changed when her high school PE teacher nudged her toward the school's new girls' golf team. "The PE teacher... said, 'Your parents play golf, right?' And I said, 'Yes.' And she said, 'Well, then you're on the golf team,'" Bordas recalls. What truly hooked her, though, was the social side of the game—the chance to play alongside her peers.

A Unique Approach to Golf

In most sports, success stories revolve around rigorous training, nonstop practice, and strict discipline. But Bordas' journey offers a different perspective. She had a natural talent for the game but never took formal lessons or spent much time at the practice tee. "I never went to the practice tee, and I never took a formal lesson," she admits. Instead, she played simply for the love of the game, letting her instincts guide her.

Her unconventional approach clearly worked. Bordas competed in the Kentucky Women's State Amateur Championship a record 52 times—an achievement no one else has matched. Though she never claimed the title, she was a semifinalist six times and a runner-up once. She also won the Marion Miley Invitational twice, along with numerous club and regional championships. Her story proves that a love for the game can carry a player just as far as relentless training.

Legacy Beyond the Green

While Bordas' personal achievements are impressive, her biggest impact lies in what she’s done for others. She has dedicated much of her time to serving on boards and committees aimed at growing the game and creating more opportunities for young girls to get involved in golf

Her journey is a reminder that sports aren’t just about trophies—they’re about joy, friendships, and the connections we build along the way. Even now, Bordas remains committed to ensuring the next generation of female golfers have the same opportunities she did. Her legacy isn't just about wins and records—it’s about the love of the game and the community it creates.
